Who writes our content
Some of our articles are written by members of our recovery community who share their lived experience. Because the stigma around addiction is still real, some of our writers and reviewers publish under a pen name or initials (for example, Jace A. and A.T.) to protect their privacy. This doesn’t change our commitment to accuracy — it protects the individual while letting them contribute genuine, first-hand or subject-matter knowledge.
How we review content
Articles are reviewed for factual accuracy and clarity by A.T., who holds a B.A. in Psychology and an M.A. in Organizational Psychology. Where an article discusses clinical topics, we keep statements conservative and source-based. Much of this site’s content was previously overseen by Elizabeth Urquhart, M.A., who served as La Jolla Recovery’s Director of Compliance from 2018 to 2022.
Our sources
We cite reputable, authoritative sources such as SAMHSA, the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA), and the National Institutes of Health (NIH), and we link to them where relevant.
Keeping content current
We date our articles and update them as information changes. The “Last updated” date reflects the most recent accuracy review.
Not medical advice
The content on this site is for general informational and educational purposes only. It reflects the experiences and research of individual writers and may not represent the views of La Jolla Recovery, and it is not a substitute for professional medical advice, diagnosis, or treatment. We do our best to share accurate information and follow best practices, but everyone’s situation is different — please reach out, ask for help, and get the perspective of a qualified mental health or addiction professional before making decisions about your care. Most importantly, you don’t have to do this alone: connect with a real person. If you or someone you love is struggling, call us at (858) 206-8148. If this feels like too much, or you’re in crisis, call or text 988 (Suicide & Crisis Lifeline) or call 911.
