Literature has many examples portraying the psychological effects of pandemics, earthquakes, floods, and other catastrophes and the internal struggle to overcome such nightmarish experiences. Ancient books, such as Homer´s “Odyssey,” describe in detail the reactions of Greek soldiers to intense horror, disorientation, behavioral paralysis, agitation, and other extreme disturbances during and after a battle.
Nevertheless, until the early 1980´s that the international psychiatric community identified this group of reactions.
Post-traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) has the peculiarity of being the only condition linked explicitly to a traumatic event.
Although human beings are generally resilient, for those who don’t recover so well, were exposed to extreme trauma over long periods or lack family/friends support, PTSD treatment can be critical to long-term recovery.
